Born in present-day Belarus and working primarily in Paris, Soutine rejected traditional realism in favor of distorted figures, swirling landscapes, and thick, dynamic brushstrokes. His work conveys raw feeling and psychological depth, exploring themes of isolation, struggle, and the physicality of paint itself, and he is considered a key influence on later modern and abstract expressionist artists.
