Antonello da Messina became a master of oil painting in the mid 1400's at the time of the Italian Early Renaissance. He was born and lived in Messina, the Kingdom of Sicily. His painting style was inspired by his teacher, Colantonio, as well as Jan van Eyck. His portraits feature faces with calm expression and typically dark backgrounds.
